Contenidos:
Volume 1, Op. 12
Arietta: This charming little abstract piece clearly shows Robert Schumann’s influence, both thematically and in the pianistic treatment.
Waltz: This piece is more characteristic of Grieg’s personal style, although in both it and nos. 3 and 5 Chopin’s influence can be felt.
Watchman’s Song: This imaginative piece, composed after a performance of Macbeth, contains an interlude (Intermezzo) headed “Spirits of the Night” in which Grieg summons up the distinctive timbres of the drums and horns with deep, pianissimo arpeggios contrasting with light common chords at a higher pitch; perhaps it describes the ghost’s voice and the watchman’s shout.
Dance of the Elves: This piece also shows genuine inspiration and is very subtle in its pictorial effect.
Folksong: This lovely tune is more difficult than it looks. Be especially careful of measures 3, 19 and 35, so that the grace notes do not shorten the value of the preceding triplet.
Norwegian Air: This piece reveals in its unique ways Grieg’s intimate relationship with Norwegian nature and peasant life.
Album Leaf: Chopin influence can be felt in this charming piece.
Patriotic Song: This composition is powerful and full of pathos. It is written in chordal (chorale) style.
Volume 2, Op. 38
Lullaby: Grieg may have been thinking of his own daughter, Alexandra, who lived just a little over a year, when he composed this beautiful lullaby.
Popular melody: This piece is vigorous and full of character, with a dramatic pedal point that creates harmonic tension.
Melody: and
Elegy: Both of these are good concert pieces with strong romantic characteristics.
Halling (Norwegian Dance): and
Spring Dance: Both of these are pure Norwegian and pure Grieg, full of rhythmic life and, for all their simplicity, vigorous and full of character.
Waltz: This fine little piece whirls past in fiery haste.
Canon: This is the first time Grieg’s conservatory training in Leizig makes and obvious appearance in his compositions. Even in this strict writing style, his personality comes through.
